Starbucks was founded in Seattle, Washington in 1971 by three friends (two teachers and a writer). Their initial aim was to sell high quality coffee beans and associated equipment to homes and busineses. It was never their intention to sell ready made cups of coffee and for over ten years they stuck to their original concept of simply selling beans and equipment.

It took the vision of their ex-marketing director Howard Schultz to turn the original Starbucks into what we know today. Despite pressure from him, the founders persistantly refused to move into drinks sales and a a result he ended up buying the company. This happened in the mid-eighties and within a few years what was a handful of Starbucks outlets in the Seattle area became hundreds and then thousands.

Thanks to an agressive expansion plan both at home and abroad and several buy-outs of already established coffe store chains, the company was able to expand rapidly. From opening its first coffee houses outside its home city of Seattle in 1987 the number of stores has rocketed to over 17,000 spread across 50 countries.
